Is a Newfoundland Dog For You?
Newfs are gentle, loyal dogs with good temperaments. They are people orientated, being especially devoted to children. They will most likely want to follow or be near you lots of the time.
They are a highly intelligent breed and if properly trained will work hard in such skills as cart pulling, tracking, obedience, water rescue and conformation. The family or owner that adopts a Newf needs to be aware of the commitment of time, attention and financial resources that they will need to dedicate to this breed.

How Do You Feel About Drool?
NEWFS DROOL! There is no getting away from it, literally. When these lovable, gentle giants shake their heads, drool will fly and can land anywhere. Newfs will drool to varying degrees depending on the dog, but they will all drool.

Do You Have the Space For Such a Large Dog?
The Newf is a giant breed of dog. An Adult Newf on average can weigh from 120lbs to 150lbs and stand between 26-28 inches high. Therefore, where they live should accommodate their giant size and need for space well. You should also have a vehicle that can accommodate the Newf.

This breed falls into the class of working dog. So what does that mean in regards to their exercise needs? When you have a Newf, it is important to the dog’s physical, mental and emotional well being that they received the level of exercise required each day. The amount of exercise will vary with each dog but you would need to minimally walk and play with your Newf every day. Newfs have a deep love for the water and are amazing swimmers. They are happiest in a lake but any body of water no matter how small will do including a wading pool, puddle and you will often see a 150lb Newf trying to get into his water bowl. You would want to find opportunities to get your Newf into the water to swim. These thumping giants on land are graceful and skilled in the water. If you read up on the Newf, you will learn about their history as incredible water rescue dogs. You will also discover clubs that host rescue competitions for these natural swimmers.

Do You Have the Financial Resources for Such a Large Dog?
The bigger the dog, the bigger the costs will be in almost all aspects of their life. These hungry giants can eat approximately one quarter of a ton of food per year, with a puppy or a working dog eating more. It’s estimated that the basic cost of feeding along with typical, expected veterinary expenses will total $3,000.00 per year. The unexpected vet bills could be in the thousands. The size of this breed means higher doses of medication; they are predisposed to certain health problems and have a lifespan on average of 10 to 12 years.

What Do You Need to Know About Grooming Requirements
Newfs are a long hair breed of dog. They have an unimaginable amount of hair. They will shed, similar to the drooling there is just no way around this point. The Newfoundland is a high maintenance dog requiring grooming on a timely basis. This breed has a thick double coat, which means lots of shedding. Their undercoat is soft and thick, the outer coat is water resistant. They require regular grooming routine, several times a week to keep their coat and skin healthy. You would have to purchase various grooming tools (grooming combs, brushes, scissors, detangler spray and so on) to keep your Newf’s coat and skin in good condition.
